Description:

The course will primarily consist of lab sessions with interspersed instructional components. There will be a review of evidence pertaining to HVLA, indications/contraindications to HVLA, a discussion of VBI/CAD testing, and concepts related to the model of spinal positioning and locking for HVLA. Specific techniques and strategies from osteopathic and Australian traditions will be presented. There will be ample time for practice and one on one attention.

Learning Objectives:

Upon completion of the course the participant will be able to:

*Describe the limitations of clinical VBI/CAD testing and perform the recommended screening procedure

*Discuss current best evidence relating to the indications/contraindications and use of high velocity low amplitude (HVLA) techniques for the spine and extremities

*Describe and demonstrate spinal positioning and locking used in cervical cervicothoracic, and lumbar HVLA techniques necessary to ensure patient comfort and safety while delivering an effective thrust

*Demonstrate enhanced proficiency and confidence in the delivery of HVLA techniques to the spine


Agenda:


Lecture will be approximately 2 hours and consist of:

  • Introduction

  • Review of Indications/contraindications for HVLA

  • Current Theories on HVLA

  • Biomechanical vs non-biomechanical thrust direction

  • Cavitation vs non-cavitation thrust efficacies

  • Soft tissue treatment pre vs. post-HVLA technique

  • Theories on pre-thrust joint positioning

Lab portion will be approximately 6 hours and consist of:

  • Demonstration of various hand hold options for HVLA

  • Proper body mechanics for HVLA

  • Prone vs. supine vs. sitting vs. standing options

  • HVLA spine techniques by location:

    • C0-C1

    • C1-C2

    • C3-C6

    • Cervicothoracic junction

    • Mid-thoracic

    • Thoracolumbar junction

    • Lumbar/sacroiliac options

    • HVLA extremity & rib options


Instructors:

Dr. Davis Koh, DPT, MBA, GCS, CSCS

Dr. Koh is a sports and orthopedic physical therapist with over 20 years of experience. He earned his B.S. degree in Physiological Sciences from the University of California at Los Angeles, as well as his Master and Doctorate degree in Physical Therapy from the University of Southern California. In 2007, Dr. Koh earned a Master in Business Administration from USC’s Marshall School of Business. 

His extensive training over the years has included studying different treatment techniques originating from Russia, Norway, France, Great Britain, Italy, South America, Korea and Australia.

Dr. Koh has been invited as a guest speaker for various organizations such as the University of California- Irvine Dept. of Sports Medicine, Columbia University, Rice University, USC School of Physical Therapy, Sacred Heart University School of Physical Therapy, California Physical Therapy Association, New York Knicks NBA Team, New York Liberty WNBA Team, Jacksonville Jaguars NFL Team, multiple NSCA State Conferences, Naval Special Warfare PT Department, US Army Med Dept. – Fort Bragg, Elite Sports and Spine Expo, and COPA World Conference.

In addition to working with individual athletes from the NFL, NBA, WTA, AVP, LPGA, UFC, MLB, WCAA, Olympics, and Canadian National Track & Field Team, Dr. Koh has enjoyed being a member of various medical teams for organizations including the Ironman Triathlon World Championships, Association of Volleyball Professionals (AVP) Tour, BMX World Cup Pro Tour, VANs Pro Skateboarding and BMX Tour, and the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) Tour. Dr. Koh is proud to have served on medical teams at various U.S. Olympic Training Centers working with athletes from Team USA Weightlifting, USA Beach and Indoor Volleyball, USA Boxing, USA Gymnastics, and USA Tae Kwon Do. Dr. Koh was part of Team USA Medical Team for the Pan-American Games and the NCAA Tae Kwon Do Medical Team. Dr. Koh has served on medical teams for Team USA Volleyball, USA Weightlifting, USA Sailing, USA Bobsled & Skeleton, USA Cricket, and USA Track and Field. Dr. Koh has also worked on national & international tours for So You Think You Can Dance, Dancing with the Stars, Ringling Bros, Black Sabbath, Beyonce, and Carrie Underwood.

In addition, Dr. Koh has been a consultant and researcher for Sketchers, Inc., Taylor-Made Golf, Inc., NBA Head Trainers Association, US Olympic Sports Med Dept., Muscle-Aid Tape, Inc., and Aspen Medical Products, Inc. He has published various articles for national physical therapy publications such as Advance Magazine and In Motion Magazine.

Dr. Koh is recognized as one of the “Best Physical Therapists in Southern California” by KCAL9/KTLA5 Television Stations in Los Angeles.

Dr. Kenneth Kim, PT, DPT, OCS, CSCS

Dr. Kenneth Kim is an Instructor of Clinical Physical Therapy in the USC Division of Biokinesiology and Physical Therapy.  Dr.Kim practices at USC Physical Therapy Associates - University Park Campus, a faculty practice of the Division of Biokinesiology and Physical Therapy, and specializes in treating orthopedic and sports injuries.  Dr. Kim is a Board Certified Orthopedic Clinical Specialist and a member of the Orthopedic Section and Sports Section of the American Physical Therapy Association. 

 

Dr. Kenneth Kim is an Instructor of Clinical Physical Therapy and a primary faculty mentor in the Orthopedic and Sports Physical Therapy residency programs.  Dr. Kim teaches in the USC Doctor of Physical Therapy program in the 1st year curriculum for the Therapeutic Exercise course.  Furthermore, he is a clinical instructor working with first and third year physical therapy students during the fall and spring semesters.  In addition,he has been a guest lecturer for the Ergonomics Course for the USC Herman Ostrow School of Dentistry the past two years.

 

Dr. Kim has had the opportunity to be involved with teaching in continuing education courses. He currently serves as one of the instructors within the Division of Biokinesiology and Physical Therapy's Orthopedic Physical Therapy Boot Camp. In this capacity Dr. Kim will teach classes related to the management of the patient with shoulder, elbow, and hand/wrist pathologies.  In addition to USC continuing education, Dr. Kim has given presentations on Musculoskeletal Injuries and Exercise to the USC Herman Ostrow School of Dentistry Fraternities.  Dr. Kim has a true passion for physical therapy and is continually driven by the opportunities to further contribute to the profession.
