One Day High Velocity Low Amplitude Technique Course

Offered by the California Orthopedic Manual Therapy Special Interest Group of the CPTA

June 9th Palo Alto CA

0.8 CEUs

Abe Shamma, PT, DPT, OCS, Cert. MDT, FAAOMPT

and

Ed Schiavone PT, COMT, OCS, FAAOMPT

Description:

Common barriers to the use of HVLA techniques cited by physical therapists include lack of confidence and insufficient instruction.  These lead to underutilization of spinal HVLA techniques in clinical practice. This course will address specific barriers to implementation of HVLA techniques in the clinic, including safety, therapist confidence, and patient selection. Techniques will be presented with an emphasis on patient and therapist comfort, ease of use, and safety. Strategies to facilitate ongoing practice and technique refinement will also be discussed.  The course will primarily consist of lab sessions with interspersed instructional components. There will be a review of evidence pertaining to HVLA, indications/contraindications to HVLA, a discussion of VBI/CAD testing, and concepts related to the model of spinal positioning and locking for HVLA. Specific techniques and strategies from osteopathic and Australian traditions will be presented. There will be ample time for practice and one on one attention.

Participants: Physical Therapists only

Instructor to Student Ratio: 1:12

Educational level: Intermediate/Advanced

Tuition:

  • COMPTSIG members - $180

  • APTA members - $210

  • Non-APTA members - $300

Learning Objectives:

At the conclusion of the course the participant will be able to:

*Discuss current best evidence relating to the use of High Velocity Low Amplitude (HVLA) techniques on the spine

*Describe and demonstrate spinal positioning and locking used in upper cervical, cervicothoracic, and lumbosacral HVLA techniques necessary to ensure patient comfort and safety while delivering an effective thrust.

*Demonstrate enhanced proficiency in the delivery of HVLA techniques to the spine – upper cervical, cervical, CT junction and lumbosacral regions.

Ed has been on faculty of the Kaiser Permanente Northern California Orthopaedic Manual Physical Therapy Fellowship since 2011. As part of the fellowship faculty he mentors Fellows in training, teaches clinical reasoning in the use of manual therapy, and has taught many classes on thrust and non-thrust mobilization/manipulation. He also teaches continuing education classes on the topic of thrust techniques for the spine and extremities to physical therapists of all skill levels. In 2016, Ed co-founded PhysioTree LLC, a healthcare information technology start-up specializing in clinical applications.

Abe Shamma, PT, DPT, OCS, Cert. MDT, FAAOMPT

Abe earned a BS in Physical Therapy from The State University of New York at Buffalo, and a DPT from Chatham University in Pittsburgh, PA.
